Drogo's Iso A 3 C Grifo.

Giotto Bizzarini, who has developed the GTO, leaved Ferrari in 1961 (1962?) together with Carlo Chiti and other engineers. He worked for the unsuccessful Formel 1-project of Earl Volpi's " Scuderia Serenissima" (see: the Ferrari Breadvan) and developed a 12-cylinder-engine for Lamborghini, then he went to Renzo Rivolta and created the Iso Rivolta with a body designed by Bertone. The next car was the luxerious Iso Grifo A 3 L (designed by Giugiaro) but in contrast to Rivolta his intention was to build a competition car to fight against Ferrari in races and he developed the A 3 C (C: competizione). This powerful car was presented first in november 1963 at the Saloon of Turino (picture 1: the the unvarnished prototype of the racing version, chassis no. B0201) and the riveted aluminium body was made by Piero Drogo's "Carrozzeria Sports Car". The not only clear but also aggressive design was loved by the press and the customers.

The A 3 C took part in many races - the 12-hours of Sebring, the 24-hours of Le Mans (picture 3 and 4) or on 31st of may 1965 the 1.000-km at the Nürburgring (picture 2).

There were built only 29 cars with this riveted alu body as Competizione or Stradale, the last six ones under the name Bizzarini. Five of them got a plastic body, also made by Drogo. After the separation from Rivolta Bizzarini changed the car's name into the legendary "Bizzarini GT Strada 5300".
